Gr 9 Up—A week at camp provides time for some serious self reflection for two very different girls. Farm girl Tess and Manhattanite Soph meet as roommates in rural New Hampshire at a young women's writing conference. Soph, a lesbian who rarely hesitates to speak her mind, writes poetry while Tess, who is in a complicated relationship with a boy, writes fan fiction. Tess plans to join the military after high school and hopes this retreat will show her a bit about what life is like beyond her tiny town. What she finds are experiences that challenge her as a writer and as a person, pushing her to find her voice in more ways than one. Narrated by the protagonists in alternating chapters, the plot has potential, with an atmospheric setting filled with a diverse group of girls, but the execution is lacking. The large cast of characters is unmemorable, save trans-exclusionary feminist Chris who spends the entire novel spewing hate at Orly, who is transgender. Chris is constantly misgendering Orly, attempting to "investigate" her, and repeating how unsafe she feels. Tess and Soph do call her out and try to broker peace. Readers may be inclined to skip Tess's lackluster fan fiction and Soph's rather abysmal poetry. While the eventual ways Tess and Soph grow from their time together is meaningful (Tess finds her role as a leader and Soph begins to understand that not everyone can be loudly and openly out), getting there is a journey filled with largely forgettable and repetitive moments. This is an absorbing, well-written novel that treats serious topics with humor and sensitivity. The characters are well developed and the plot believable and engaging. The story is told in the voices of the two principal characters, Soph and Tess, and every chapter includes an excerpt from each of their writing journals--sonnets by Soph and fan fiction by Tess. Each narrator has a distinctive voice, and the authors have done a brilliant job in reflecting their personalities not only in their dialogue, but in their writing. (As an aside, the authors' skill with these very different literary forms, as well as free verse and journalistic style, which also feature in the story, is impressive.) The journals also reflect the two girls' growing attraction to each other, which develops naturally as the story progresses. But Snowsisters is a lot more than their story. Tom Wilinsky and Jen Sternick do a wonderful job of portraying the inner-directedness of teenagers, such as the New York girl who thinks you can just "order out" in rural New Hampshire; the farm girl who can't imagine that a city girl knows how to skate; and other assumptions that adolescents make. They also understand just how mean adolescent girls can sometimes be to one another. The group of girls who come together for a writing workshop learn little things like the different names for "hard rolls" in different parts of the country, and big things like how to face prejudice; how to exercise leadership; and how to try to understand people who are different from themselves. Above all, although Tess and Soph fall in love, neither of these talented, articulate young women is defined only by her sexual orientation. I am neither Y.A. nor a member of the LGBT community, but I can say unreservedly that this is a wonderful read.

“Snowsisters” is set over 2 winter weeks, at a writer’s conference for young women. As one might anticipate, the girls come from an assortment of locations and backgrounds, urban (the writers have fun pointing out that Manhattan and Brooklyn are NOT the same NYC) and rural, wealthy and tightly-budgeted. They are gay and straight, cis- and transgender and, it is subtly implied, of varied ethnicity. And they each bring their own goals and their own baggage. What they have in common is that they are all gifted writers and they are willing to work hard at honing their craft, something particularly refreshing in the age of Tweets and Blue Apron.While the heart of the book is the gradual, delicately told story of first love between the protagonists, Tess and Soph, the authors have given every girl at the conference a love story with herself. If you have young people in your life – especially if they are LGBTQIA and/or artists – or if you yourself wouldn’t let a “YA” label stop you from enjoying a fresh and charming debut novel, I highly recommend “Snowsisters.”I must, however, note that there is one thing about this book that left me unsettled. It has nothing to do with the story or the way it's told. It’s the “Note for Readers” that precedes the story (you can read this yourself on the “Look Inside” on this Amazon page).I can see from other Comments on this page that I’m a dinosaur in this thinking, but I was taken aback when I first saw that disclaimer. And after reading this novel, I am even more taken aback. "Snowsisters" is spectacularly supportive, nurturing, and personhood-affirming of (a) the LGBTQAI community, (b) young women and (c) artists. And yet, because some painful moments are, of necessity, either shown or referenced, and because some language might be used that, if inflicted in real life, would cause pain or discomfort, the story needs a disclaimer? I’m confounded that, in an era when social media and the news relentlessly bombard our young people with the misunderstandings, misinformation and ugliness in the world, we have decided it is necessary to bubble-wrap their fiction. This has made me feel very old and very depressed indeed.

I thoroughly enjoyed this young adult novel. I really liked the main characters, Tess and Soph, two young gay girls, each hoping to get into the colleges of their choice for their own personal reasons. They meet as roommates at a winter, week-long, writing conference for young women. One girl from New York City who writes poetry, is fairly open about her sexuality, and doesn’t understand why anyone who is gay isn’t equally as open. The other main character, from a small farm town in New Hampshire, keeps her personal life to herself. She appears to be a girly girl who wears pink and even seems to have a boyfriend. The feelings of each girl are also revealed in their writings throughout the week. This book was very well written and the plot very well developed. But, what was equally impressive was how the authors also revealed the feelings of each main character in their writings at the conference, through well written sonnets and fan fiction. These girls wanted all the same things every girl wants – e.g. to get into the school of their choice, to find a partner, to be themselves without judgement from others and to just be happy. The book even addresses the transgender issues and prejudices. This book isn’t just for members of the LBGTQ community. It’s a wonderful, insightful story that all young people would enjoy reading. After reading this book, I have a little better understanding of the difficulties that young gay people encounter, how they feel about themselves and the varying situations in which they each find themselves. I especially loved the ending. It was just perfect how the story evolved and the way the authors ended it.
