another great adventure book written by the man who actually experienced life with these Native Americans when their everyday lives are now pages of our history.
This books is available in two different versions: the Lakeside Press edition and the Bison Book edition from the University of Nebraska Press. The one to get if possible is the Lakeside Press version as it's more complete. The Bison Book edition is missing some chapters towards the end which were cut as they weren't considered part of the "among the Indians" concept of the book (dealing with the Mormons and Boller's thoughts on the future of the Indians). Boller lived among the Mandan, Gros Ventre, Arikara and Sioux tribes during the late 1850s and into the 1860s. Reading the first chapter I didn't think too much about the book as Boller was talking about fur trade history (with some of his details wrong). But once he reaches the Upper Missouri, the book really becomes VERY fascinating. Boller writes well and describes the day to day life of the Indians. I found it fascinating and there's a lot of great details (of course, this is my opinion as other readers may gloss over parts that I think are awesome). If you want to transport back to this time period and experience it for yourself, this is the book. I kept wanting to take notes but there were so many details I thought worthy that it would have taken me a lot longer to read the book. I hope to read this one again someday. A treasure.
