Why I picked this one up: (Knowing I would cry)Because I grew up with English Mastiffs. I grew up at dogs shows, veterinary clinics, raising and eventually selectively breeding them. Our male was ranked one of the top 100 mastiffs in the United States. Our puppies were potty trained before they left our house, and they ALWAYS smelled like baby wipes. I remember the beautiful blue eyes of the puppies the day they opened their little eyes, and I remember them being so top heavy that when they started to push themselves up, they would topple over bc their heads weighted too much. And that puppy breath! <3 So seeing a mastiff on the cover of this book, there was no way I wasn't picking this one up. My mom wants it now, but I know she will cry! As soon as Lauren kept making the comment "but she's only 6", they rarely make it to 8 years old. Ours made it to 10, 11 & 12 and we lost one male to cancer at 8. BUT they ALWAYS had a nice big steak the night before we had to say goodbye. Now for the actual review!Characters/Story:There was no need to build up the characters in this story. This story was about Gizelle and Lauren. People come and go, and those friendships, although important to both Gizelle and Lauren and the story, were brief. This reminded me a little of a "walk down memory lane".A long coffee shop conversation with someone that needed years of catching up.An interview without the questions. So this is simple, and not overly in depth. Lauren focuses on the times that are important to her, the memories that mattered to her and deeply impacted her life. There were times that her relationship with Gizelle seemed to be slightly sidelined and Lauren's life picked up a little, but Gizelle was always around and if you are familiar with these dogs they do, honest to goodness, fit in the most unbelievable places.Writing:Crisp and clear. VERY minimal grammatical/spelling errors. (Then again I cried the last 40-ish pages, so I could be wrong.) If they existed, they did not stand out to me.Gizelle's Bucket List was a quick, enjoyable read. Even though it was sad, it was a passionate story about a girl and her dog. The stories were hilarious at times, and became even more entertaining being so familiar with the breed. Those dramatic scenes of pulling themselves off the furniture, that back end truly does "slowly" follow and that long stretch before they actually remove those back legs from the couch. (hahaha)The big old yawns, and those unsure warning barks. These dogs DO NOT believe that personal space exists. What is theirs is theirs and what is yours is also theirs. They are too big to argue with. The Ending:Throughout the story Lauren develops and grows. The things you learn from dogs can be unbelievable. Who would think that a dog could teach us so much about unconditional love and not judging people. You watch Lauren grow in this story, and in the 6 years that she was able to spend with Gizelle taught her so much about moving on, saying goodbye and letting go. This is truly a rewarding story with tidbits of laughter and the invasion of personal space. When you say goodbye to an animal, you truly do "feel" them leave the room. It was beautiful, but I do have to stop now because I'm going to cry again. :(

Gizelle was a gentle giant and I loved how the author was so clearly able to convey Gizelle's personality. While I cried through the sad parts, thinking of my own gentle giant, a few lines from the book really spoke to me. "I guess when you bring a dog into your life you are setting yourself up for heartbreak, aren't you? Sure, you will most likely have to say good-bye and it will be the saddest day ever, but it's so worth it, isn't it? To have a dog. To learn from their unconditional love". This is so true and something that people who say they can never go through it again need to remember. Yes it's sad to lose our canine companions but sadder to not experience the companionship and love that dogs bring to us. I also liked the way she brought her own life and growth into the story. This is a book I will share with other dog lovers who have loved and lost and had the courage to do it all over again.

I absolutely loved this book by Lauren Fern Watt. I read it in one night, I simply could not put it down. I laughed, I cried, I fell in love with Lauren and Gizelle. Lauren was such a brave young woman to do the moving and traveling with this large, large loving dog. It was a story of a girl coming of age, growing up with a mother that struggled with addiction and how Lauren coped with it with the help of her beloved dog. I have purchased numerous copies of this book for friends and fellow dog lovers. I plan to read it again and can't wait for the film to come out. In my opinion, this was a much richer story than Marley and me. It is definitely worthy of your reading. Lauren is absolutely delightful. I love her heart for dogs and she seems to choose canines with the most unique, and sometimes challenging personalities. You won't be sorry by purchasing this book!

Gizelle's Bucket List is a wonderful book not only about loving our pet but also about learning some valuable life lessons about loving ourselves and others unconditionally. Upon reading the first paragraph, I was captivated by Ms. Watt's charming and very descriptive style of writing. I finished it in one sitting! It is about a girl's journey during an ever-changing time in her young life with her best friend Gizelle, a 160-pound mastiff, faithfully by her side. As the title depicts, the ending is bittersweet, but you will also laugh, learn and respect the author's raw honesty dealing with her Mother's addiction.I highly recommend reading this adventurous tale. You will thoroughly enjoy!

I read this book in a day and a half and loved it. Gizelle is an English mastiff and Lauren is the girl who loves her. The bucket list is Lauren's resolve to make sure that Gizelle, who has cancer, has wonderful days while she can still enjoy them. Lauren is forced to accept what good dog owners know: she will outlive her pet, and there will come a day when the kindest and best thing for the animal is to say goodbye. This is a dog story, yes, but it is Lauren's coming of age. We see glimpses of Lauren's life from age 19 to 25. College, life in New York, jobs, roommates, romances. She struggles to make sense of her mother's addictions yet break free of them. She also asks what many of us ask: How does one live authentically, and where do I go from here? I enjoyed her descriptions of family and friends, the characters she encounters in New York, and especially her road trip with Gizelle and her dad. The photos at the start of each chapter are lovely. Thank you, Lauren, for letting us know Gizelle, but also for letting us know you. You lead with your heart and you love unconditionally. Well done.

So sad at the end. Used 1/2 box of tissues. Brought back memories of all the dogs i have loved and lost.

What a sweet and loving story about a girl and her dog! Friends come in all shapes and sizes and this pairing of besties is wonderful. This book has a heart as big as Gizelle.
