About the Author

Richard Krueger is professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota. He is an internationally recognized authority on the use of focus group interviewing within the public environment. For 25 years he served as evaluation leader for the University of Minnesota Extension Service followed by 10 years teaching graduate courses in program evaluation and research methodology. He is a former president of the American Evaluation Association and a member of the Qualitative Research Consultants Association. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.  In his spare time he repairs his motorcycle, swaps stories with friends, and shops for tools at the local hardware store. Maybe you’ve seen him there.Â

I was trained as a focus group researcher more than 20 years ago, and used to do focus groups as part of my job. I haven't done any for a long time, and bought this book as a handy refresher. Krueger and Casey are two of the main authorities writing about focus group today, and this book seems to have been written as a textbook for an introductory class in qualitative methodology. That's all I needed - just wanted to dust off my skills. This was a quick read and helped me remember some things I haven't used in a long time. I think this would also be a handy guide for someone new to focus groups.

This is truly a practical guide that will walk you through the entire process of designing your focus group project, sampling, question design and routing, data analysis and report writing. Krueger writes in a clear, non-academic style that still leans on current research and theory with proper citations. You could use this guide to complete your first focus group successfully. The book has a plastic spiral binding which I guess must give it that "practical" feel. Lots of tips and tricks abound through the book.

My dissertation chair suggested that I consider a focus study for my research. She suggested that I find a text about focus groups and further went on to recommend a SAGE text on the subject. Well I hit the jackpot with this one. I sat down yesterday morning with trepidation-- however that feeling soon changed. This is a scholarly book that is entertaining. I am halfway through with it and will easily finish it today.

Theory and practice are sound,, however this now a bit dated technology wise, all they talk about is telephone conference calls which is now really outdated.

Very clear and remarkably practical text. I found it enjoyable to read and highly informative. Real-world examples of what works and (more importantly) what does not. Highly recommend this book as an introduction to effective and successful focus group execution.

The book is great with easy to follow content. However I ordered this as new and the cover was creased, there were stains on a couple of pages and part of Chapters 4 and 5 were missing. Would not order from this seller.

The best way to learn how to run focus groups is by apprenticing with an experienced master who is willing to teach you everything s/he knows. Failing that, read this book.This delightfully straightforward manual tells you what you need to know to conduct solid focus groups. Unlike many research methods books, these authors use plain English and transparent language. It provides an especially good section on data analysis that I've read a number of times and continue to learn from. The authors also teach workshops on focus groups that are well worth attending if you can.Some researchers see focus groups as a lazy or inadequate method of research. I'd argue that focus groups answer some questions that cannot be answered in any other way. The method is one of a number of valuable tools that belong in every qualitative researchers bag of tricks.

Well written, easy to read with expert advice and many practical tips and no immediate need to extend further. However, I would appreciate a few more examples about the art of coding as well as scientific foundations for the advice given.
