About the Author

T.M.R. Ellis is Director of the Educational Technology Resources Centre at the University of Oxford. He has taught and written about Fortran for over 25 years, and was a member of both the ANSI and ISO committees responsible for developing the Fortran 90 and Fortran 95 standards. He is currently Convenor of the ISO Fortran Working Group which is responsible for all future development of Fortran. Ivor R. Philips is a Senior Principal Mathematician at Boeing in Seattle, Washington. A specialist in numerical analysis, he has led a team of experts in creating the Boeing Fortran subprogram libraries, and was head of the US delegation to the ISO Fortran Working Group during the creation of Fortran 90. About Thomas M. LaheyThomas M. Lahey runs his own company, Lahey Computer Systems, Inc., in Incline Valley, Nevada, which develops and markets Fortran compilers for the PC market, setting the standard by which other compilers are measured. Positives- Has all the neccesary information to begin programming in FORTRAN.Negatives- Too much text to for explaining such a simple programming language. Examples are incomplete and useless. Not a good reference text. I suggest using Intro to FORTRAN 90 for Engineers and Scientist by Larry Nyhoff.

The author seems to think that if a job cannot be done efficiently using a certain programming style, then the programmer is a bad person for wanting to do that problem.If, on the other hand, you work for a living and want useful information and not condescending attitude, try the books by Adams and Brainerd.

There are good and very bad features I find in this book. It is quite comprehensive as a reference to F90, and if you already know a programming language (particularly F77) and want an encyclopedic treatise on the language, it is good. It would not be a good introductory text, however, for beginning programmers; it really assumes the reader already knows some of the things that it purportedly tries to explain.The biggest negative I find is that the book is extremely dogmatic in its comments on programming style. Comments like "This feature is included for compatibility with earlier versions of FORTRAN, but should never be used in new programs" are heavily scattered through the book. Although I am now retired, I spent decades as a FORTRAN programmer -- admittedly, never using F90 specifically -- and if I were to be writing code to be used under a F90 compiler system, I would never code in the way the authors advise. There are features of F90 that I might use, but some of the authors' dogmatic statements (which could apply to F77 code too, in many cases) are 180 degrees removed from my own ideas as to what constitutes easy-to-read FORTRAN code.

This book explains very well the features of Fortran90 programming, but it is way too pedantic. I would have preferred a more concise, O'Reilly style of writing. Many examples of very simple code are provided to illustrate points - I found them to distract from the points being made. The book could also have benefited from a more Object Oriented focus as many of the new features of F90 over F77 are attempts to move Fortran in this direction.

I learnt F90 from this and it is very good book, which tells you good programming practices. It teaches you how to write proper structured F90 programs and how to avoid the pitfalls of F77 or fortran langauge in general. And I saw lot of people including one of my professors writing bad to horrible F77 programs. Having worked as a professional C coder before, also helped me to appreciate this book.
