I am a Husband and Father of 5 (two of which were adopted and came from traumatic history.)As you could imagine, communicating with everyone was very challenging.Not to mention the Complexity and Stress of today's Fast-Paced lifestyle, just adds to the problem.This was a recipe for disaster... on the way to becoming another statistic (Fatherless children with a stressed mother).I'm only 60% through this book and already it's CHANGE MY LIFE!I'm able to understand (listen to) everyone and convey a better message through the techniques in this book.My Wife - who doesn't know - has been able to keep a better composure as a result.She's skeptical about Psychiatric Techniques, so it's been hard for me to share the details outlined in this book.All in all, I highly recommend "Just Listen" for ANYONE who wants to know How To Get Through to People.THANK YOU DR. MARK GOULSTON!

So I just finished this book last night after literally ingesting it. I don't know that there is a book I have read in years that has more of an opportunity to impact people for the better than this one. Often our natural human inclination is to think inward in a self-interested way. In "Just Listen" Dr. Mark Goulston proves in page after page that getting the attention off of ourselves and pointing it instead toward others is ironically one of the most effective ways of improving our own odds of success. When the salesperson cares more about understanding the desires of his (or her) prospect than in performing a monologue on his product he actually will see sales increase. When the parents try and empathize with the hormonal screwy teenager rather than just lecture them, common ground can be forged. When the job applicant cares to know more about the organization and the interviewer than they care about self promoting, it actually makes them more attractive to their would be future employer. This book takes conventional wisdom (or more accurately named "conventional false assumptions") and turns them on their heads, opening up a new path toward success. I will be sharing this book with anyone who is willing to listen to me! But only after I have listened to where they are at and what their passions are first, right Dr. Goulston?

From history books, to autobiographies to self-help and business books - they all interest me (primarily non-fiction). Seeing this listed as a "you might also be interested in..." recommendation by Amazon, I bit and went ahead and bought the book. There is no way I could recommend it highly enough. I have used just about every technique in the book in the past week and I only 'finished' it 2 days ago - in other words, it is able to be applied from the word go. Well written, fast, applicable and filled with stories that are relevant to so many situations, this is a must-read for anyone who has ever been in a situation where they find themselves 'hitting their head against a wall' or have learned that they want to shift their style of communication to be more collaborative or simply because you wish to be a better human being and "interested rather than interesting". From cover to cover, there are examples of what you can do to calm a person down during a conversation or help someone understand your point of view even when you never thought you could. If only I had found it sooner because I know for a fact I am better now than I was prior to reading it! Thank you Dr. Goulston

This is one of the most useful self-help book that I have come across on the subject of communication. It lives up to its appealing title, but the "secret to getting through to absolutely anyone" does not come in an enormous volume. It is long enough to cover, but short enough to be interesting.The author, Dr Goulston (evidently a true pro in psychiatry, counselling, negotiation, crises intervention, etc) presents his principles and techniques in a straightforward manner, without bogging the reader down with technical jargons. The ideas and techniques that he presents are well illustrated with real-life examples that help the read to grasp and practice.In all, it is a small book that packs a great deal of highly useful information and suggestions. It is also fun to read. It is highly recommended for anyone interested in improving interpersonal communication.

I've never been one for a self help book. I always thought i had just enough common sense to be successful and stay out of trouble. So after a rather bad professional patch, I broke down and bought the book after it was referenced in the NY times. I am a marketing professional and I am keenly aware of when I am being targeted. Sure Dr. Goulston is selling his brand, but there is excellent advice in there. The Chapter about dissonance hit particularly me particularly strong. I realized the way I perceive myself and the way I was being viewed by other people was miles apart. Yeah its common sense, but for those of us who can't seem to read when we are making people uncomfortable, it really provides actionable strategies for listening and being empathetic.The is also a chapter about being more interested than interesting. Again, this information provided me with additional tools to look inside myself and assess not only how others see me but I can see them.

The breadth and depth of our communication skills (or lack thereof) can enhance or breakdown the quality of our relationships with others. It is a basic human need to be seen, understood and felt by others. When this happens, magic unfolds and a beautiful connection can be made. Just Listen is a brilliant toolbox loaded with valuable lessons and examples for making meaningful connections with virtually anyone. Dr. Goulston seems to come from a real place of deep caring for others as he empowers the reader to truly make a difference in their own life and the lives of others- one conversation at a time. Thank you Dr.! I only wish I had discovered you and your book sooner.
