Review
"For sheer drama, no age compares to the age of exploration, no explorers compare to the conquistadors and no conquistador compares to Hernan Cortes. In Buddy Levy’s finely wrought and definitive Conquistador, the worlds of Cortes and Montezuma collide and come to life. Five hundred years after the conquest, the Cadillo and his prey have been made human. To read Conquistador is to see, hear and feel two cultures in a struggle to the death with nothing less than the fate of the western hemisphere at stake. Prodigiously researched and stirringly told, Conquistador is a rarity: an invaluable history lesson that also happens to be a page-turning read."—Jeremy Schaap, best-selling author of Cinderella Man: James J. Braddock, Max Baer and the Greatest Upset in Boxing History, and Triumph: The Untold Story of Jesse Owens and Hitler’s Olympics "Sweeping and majestic...A pulse-quickening narrative."—Neal Bascomb, author of Red Mutiny: Eleven Fateful Days on the Battleship Potemkin"A century before the Mayflower, a single man settled the destiny of the Americas far more momentously than the Puritans ever could....Conquistador offers a fascinating account of the first and most decisive of those encounters: the one between the impetuous Spanish adventurer Cortés and Montezuma, the ill-starred emperor of the Aztecs.... [An] almost unbelievable story of missionary zeal, greed, cruelty and courage."—Wall Street Journal“Drawing heavily on both Spanish and Aztec sources…. [Levy stresses] the military strategy, diplomatic initiaitves, and personal relationship between Cortés and Aztec emperor Montezuma…. Well-written…. Highly recommended.”—Library Journal, starred review“A fateful meeting of civilizations…. Cortes is front and center in this book…. [Levy’s] description of the final siege on Tenochtitlan is especially dramatic.”—Associated Press“Explores just how far invaders will go to take what they want.”–Cape Cod Times

I ordered Conquistador while preparing to travel to Mexico City, to better grasp local history. Conquistador: Hernan Cortes, King Montezuma, and the Last Stand of the Aztec is the riveting and vivid account of Cortes and his brutal conquest of the Aztec empire in 1519 – 1521. Montezuma, king of the Aztecs, ruled over 15 million people when Cortes arrived with a few hundred Spanish soldiers and Cuban porters. The capitol city of Tenoctitlán, which the conquistadors called the “City of Dreams,†was built on Lake Texcoco, much like Venice, yet bigger and more beautiful than any European city of the era. Through shrewd military campaigns, duplicity, and diplomacy, Cortes conquered the Aztecs and Mexico in the name of the Spanish Crown, utterly destroying Tenoctitlán in the process. The subject matter may not be uplifting, but author Buddy Levy’s telling of it is absolutely spellbinding. Moreover, it is astonishing that such a detailed play-by-play account of the events was recorded and preserved for five hundred years. I listened to the story on unabridged CD, as read by Patrick Lawlor, and found Conquistador so compelling as to listen to it a second time.
Many writers in our time would focus exclusively on the cruelty of the conquest of the Aztecs. But while the author doesn't deny this point, he is sober enough to put the infamous and fascinating Cortes in the context of his time. Both the good and the bad is laid bare in this book. Fact-based, highly entertaining, and well written. What more can you ask.
I wanted to read up on the conquistadors, and therefor ordered 3 books in 1 go from Amazon. This book about the UNBELIEVABLE conquest of Mexico by Hernan Cortes, was a true eye opener. Like everybody else I had heard about the conquistadors and knew only so much. But this book opened like a whole new world to me. Hernan Cortes is one of the most fascinating figures of history, a man who was at the right place in the right time in history to build an empire. Big up to the writer, this book is a page turner. I couldn't put it away and surely I'm going to read it again in the future.
I learned this history (basics) as a child but had never read an in-depth account of Cortes activity in Mexico. Anyone interested in history will enjoy this book. It’s hard not to be judgmental of the Spanish conquest of the Aztecs and many parallels with American conquest of native Americans is obvious. The Spanish takeover of the Aztec country and culture was much more of a fight than I’d realized. The Aztecs were very aware that their world was ending. This was not a subtle conquest.
Great book. Easy to read. Gives the history of Cortes shortly before his arrival to his conquest of the Aztec empire. Now I want to know what happened before and after. The way it's written makes it hard to put down. I haven't read anything else about this history so I can't compare it. But I loved it.
As an avid reader of history and expedition, this is at this point one of the best books I have ever read. It had me loving, hating and in awe of one of history's two greatest players. Just a fantastic book. The author is amazing in his ability to keep the reader spellbound throughout this story.
I can't even imagine the research and hard work that goes into writing a book like this. The author accurately depicts one of the most important events in history, the conquest of the proud Aztec empire. Even though the reader knows that the Spaniards will inevitably win, it is still very suspenseful as the Aztecs mount a great resistance to the invaders. There are so many small details that are discussed in this book that really bring the ancient conquest to life as well as the motivations and strategies that Cortes employed. Great read.
One of the most amazing books I've ever read. If it was fiction I would have put it down as "not credible." Couldn't put it down. If you like history and are not already an expert on Cortes .. BUY IT NOW!!
